Alright, so I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a classic OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch for a while now. I finally decided to pull the trigger and get one, but with a twist – I wanted that transparent case back so I could see the movement in action. Here’s how it all went down.

First, I did some digging online. Forums and watch enthusiast sites were my best friends. I found out that getting a new Speedmaster from OMEGA with a hesalite crystal and a display back was a no-go. They stopped making those a long time ago. Bummer, right?

But then I stumbled upon this guy, Thomas Preik, who makes aftermarket sapphire case backs. People online were saying good things about his stuff, so I thought, “Why not?” I ordered one, and man, the craftsmanship is top-notch.

While I was waiting for the case back, I started shopping around for the watch itself. I knew I wanted the classic Moonwatch – manual-wind, hesalite crystal, black dial – the whole nine yards. The one that’s basically unchanged since it went to the moon. I mean, that’s the dream, isn’t it?

I found a decent deal on a pre-owned Speedmaster Professional. It was in great shape and had all the original parts. I pulled the trigger and bought it. Man, was I excited.

When the watch and the case back arrived, I took them to my local watchmaker. This guy is a wizard, let me tell you. He carefully installed the transparent case back, and I was blown away by the result.

Now I have my Moonwatch, but with a little personal touch. I can flip it over and admire that beautiful 863 caliber movement, with its nice finishing. It’s like having the best of both worlds – the classic look on the front and a peek under the hood on the back.

This whole process got me thinking about how the watch world is always changing. They’ve got these new Speedmaster 38mm models now, all fancy with gold and different metals. But for me, nothing beats the classic. And now I’ve got one with a cool, unique twist.

  • Got the watch
  • Bought a see-through back from some guy online, Thomas Preik.
  • Took it to a watch guy who put it all together.
  • Now I can see the inside of my watch, which is pretty darn cool.

It’s not just a watch; it’s a piece of history on my wrist. And now, it’s got a little bit of my own history added to it, too.
