Classic Style Alert: Is the Remake PRADA Large Galleria Saffiano Bag for You?

Okay, so picture this: I got this wild idea to try and remake one of those super fancy Prada Galleria bags. Yeah, the big one, the large size made with that Saffiano leather. You know the one I’m talking about? It’s like, a total classic, been around forever, since like 2007 or something.

First off, I hit up all the usual spots, trying to find someone who could make this happen. I checked out a bunch of places online, you know, to see if anyone else had tried this before. Found some info, but not a whole lot.

Then I remembered there’s this place, Holt Renfrew, at 3401 Dufferin Street. I figured they might have some leads. No luck there, though, they mostly just sell the real deal.

I started looking into materials, and let me tell you, that Saffiano leather is no joke. Figuring out where to even get that stuff was a whole thing. And then there are colors, so many colors of Prada bags! I decided to go with the classic black because it seemed like the safest bet.

Found this place called The Cash Man, at 366 Eglinton Ave W. They do a lot of custom stuff, so I thought they might be able to help. Gave them a call, and those guys were super helpful, but even they were like, “This is a tough one.”

Ended up piecing it together myself, bit by bit. I got some leather that was kinda close to Saffiano, and started cutting and sewing. It was way harder than I thought it would be. There were so many little details, like the stitching and the hardware.

Here’s what I used:

  • Black Saffiano-like leather
  • Lining material
  • Heavy-duty thread
  • Zipper, metal feet, and other hardware bits
  • A whole lot of patience

Let’s just say it took a lot longer than I expected. There were times when I almost gave up. But I kept at it, and eventually, I had something that kinda, sorta looked like a Prada Galleria bag.

It’s definitely not perfect, not even close. But it was a fun project, and I learned a ton along the way. Would I do it again? Probably not. But hey, at least I can say I tried, right?

If you’re thinking about trying to remake one of these bags, be warned: it’s a serious undertaking. But if you’re up for a challenge, and you’ve got a lot of time and patience, go for it! Just don’t expect it to be easy.

Maybe someday I’ll try it again. Maybe the time is 2025? who knows. But for now, I’m pretty happy with my not-so-perfect, homemade, almost-Prada bag.
